According to recent reports, Corning Inc., the world“s biggest maker of fibre-optic lines, is planning to spend US$ 750 million to expand it output capacity by 50%. Corning currently controls 40% of the global fibre-optics market, twice as much as its nearest competitor, Lucent Technologies Inc. The company, based in the New York town that bears its name, has fibre-making factories in the US, Britain, Germany and Australia. Optical fibre, an ultra-fine strand of glass, is used as a pipeline to carry vast amounts of information in the form of light pulses.
