Overall glass production in the Czech Republic rose by 17.4% year-on-year to a record high of 1.66 million tonnes in 2004, according to figures from the Czech Association of Glass and Ceramics Industry (ASKP). Czech glass producers generated a total revenue of CZK 42.6 billion (USD 1.811 billion/EUR 1.451 billion) for the period, down nearly 6% year-on-year. Glass exports increased by 12% to CZK 41.5 billion (USD 1.764 billion/EUR 1.414 billion), boosted by higher demand on foreign markets and by the entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union. The country“s glass imports went up by 20% to CZK 15.7 billion (USD 667.3 million/EUR 534.8 million ). The Czech glass industry employed 28,441 in 2004, down 12%. In 2003, national glass output rose by 5.0% year-on-year to 1.416 million tonnes, it was reported on 13 September 2004. Flat glass accounted for the largest share of the country“s annual glass production and increased by 6.5% to 722,000 tonnes in 2003.
