Demand for touch panel materials increases

Touch screen panel materials such as ITO, OCA and cover lens are in high demand due to increasing tablet and smartphone shipments. New tablet and smartphone models are being made in order to compete with Apple’s new iPhone and iPad

Touch screen panel materials such as ITO, OCA and cover lens are in high demand due to increasing tablet and smartphone shipments, according to industry sources. New tablet and smartphone models are being made in order to compete with Apple’s new iPhone and iPad, which is causing panel makers to see a rise in both material orders and competition. Tablet and smartphone brands have been putting out various new models such as the Nexus 7, which has already been sold out throughout the US and are expected to continue to do so when released in other nations. Additionally, white brands are releasing low-priced tablets and smartphones to compete, giving panel makers both increased profit and pressure to meet growing panel material demands.

ODM/OEM makers shipped a total of 20.07 million tablet PCs globally to international vendors in second-quarter 2012, rising 3.3% on quarter. This trend is expected to continue, as tablet shipments will surpass notebook shipments in 2016 due to consumers in mature markets looking for more ways to be mobile, according to NPD DisplaySearch. Meanwhile, OGS (one glass solution) touch panels are expected to increase five-fold this year and panel makers are also preparing for in-cell technology as it is expected to be the standard for cell phones in the future as well as the next technology used in the next-generation iPhone.
