Situated in the heart of Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, are the magnificent Victorian-era Bank Buildings. The Irish apparel giant Primark has owned the five-story building ensemble since 1979, and it was designated as a listed structure in 1980.
These buildings have previously withstood two fires. The most recent and catastrophic one occurred in 2018 and completely damaged the supporting framework and all the timber construction.
An excellent rebuild based on the original model started and IMC Glass provided 300 Slim-Glaze units in total to replace the single-glazed windows previously installed, made in accordance with the historical model starting on the third level.
In order to achieve the excellent Ug values of up to 1.1 W/(m²K) for thin double glazing, they are filled exclusively with xenon or krypton and are also thermally insulated.
Edgetech‘s Super Spacer® Heritage, the flexible warm edge spacer designed specifically for double glazing in restoration projects, is the cherry on top. It can also be put in frames with extremely low glass inserts without being noticeable because of its small height of 3 millimetres.
“This super-slim double glazing makes it possible to retain the original style with excellent thermal efficiency. With a unit thickness of just 14 millimetres, they achieve a Ug value of 1.2 W/m²K,” explained Aaron McCreanor, Managing Director of IMC Glass. “The difficulty in manufacturing insulating glass with such a thin glass structure lies in ensuring gas-tightness over a long period of time and preventing condensation from forming in the space between the panes.”
