The US manufacturer of automatic-dimming rear-view mirrors and commercial fire protection products Gentex Corp. has begun shipping “aspheric” exterior electrochromic mirrors for several Mercedes-Benz luxury sedans, including the SL, S and E Class models. The contract is valued at US$ 14 million for 1997. Gentex is also shipping interior, as well as flat exterior, electrochromic mirrors for the aforementioned models. Aspheric mirrors are wide angle exterior mirrors that use spherically curved glass with multiple radius of curvature to increase the driver“s field of view and eliminate the vehicle“s blind spots. Electrochromic mirrors automatically dim when subjected to headlight glare from following vehicles. Gentex manufactures both flat and aspheric exterior “night vision safety” mirror subassemblies, and ships them to Reitter and Scheffenacker, a supplier of complete exterior mirror systems, for final assembly into complete exterior mirrors and subsequent resale to Mercedes-Benz.
