The Estonian glass container production arm of Owens-Illinois Inc. (O-I) recently placed an order for eight machines with inspection solutions specialist, IRIS Inspection machines.
Based at Jarvakandi, at the heart of the northern European Baltic State and in the glass capital of Estonia, O-I Estonia operates two furnaces and four production lines. The factory manufactures a range of white flint glass packaging, including vodka bottles, water bottles, soft drinks and beer bottles, as well as jars. A high percentage of output involves articles with complex shapes (conical, square, rectangular etc) and engravings, which are typical for the region’s vodka industry.
IRIS Inspection Machines has been commissioned to supply eight machines in total to replace existing automatic inspection equipment. The order includes four Evolution 16 machines, each of which features 12 cameras to provide full coverage of bottles and jars, as well as four additional cameras for the detection of stress defects in the body. This equipment can inspect 100% of a container, even in engraved and decorated areas.
Evolution 16 is equipped with the SELECTOR function, using the 12 sidewall cameras to detect deformed articles, lean neck bottles and verticality defects, as well as diameter and height defects.
Also supplied will be four Evolution 5 machines, innovative devices that are intended for the inspection of base defects, narrow neck finish, widemouth finish, base stress inspection and mould number reading.
One each of the Evolution 5 and Evolution 16 machines will be installed on all four production lines.
A subsidiary of the Wisetec Group, IRIS Inspection Machines was established to provide turnkey inspection solutions for mass-produced glass containers of any shape or colour, including wine, beer, liquor and Champagne bottles, pharmaceuticals and food containers. A team of dedicated Research and Development engineers has evolved a range of equipment to match the industry’s demanding requirements and satisfy the inspection needs of key international customers.
