Glazeguard SW Ltd., a customer of Kommerling, is the manufacturer and installer of a glass floor on the Blackpool Tower, at a height of 500 feet.
Kommerling customer, Glazeguard SW Ltd. has manufactured and installed the new ‘Air Walk’ at the top of the recently refurbished, iconic Blackpool Tower, on the west coast of Northern England. This spectacular glass floor and wall reveal the original Victorian steel structure and provide a breathtaking view of the drop down to the promenade 500 feet below. Believed to be the highest glass floor in the country, the fitting of the floor and wall panels required both ingenuity and considerable expertise and skill from Glazeguard’s team of installation engineers.
Chris Davis, Technical Director at Glazeguard, explains more; “The Air Walk is made up of five TripleLite™ panels, each of which measures 1.8m x1.8m and weighs nearly 500kg. Initially we used cranes to raise the panels, they were then transferred to the Tower’s internal transit system and then finally our engineers undertook the precision task of securing them high above the Blackpool sea front. The installation was completed without incident and a day early and is one of the most exciting and visually impressive projects that we have worked on to date.”
From the project’s inception, Glazeguard has worked closely with the Kay Elliot Partnership, who designed and managed the Tower regeneration project. In addition to the floor panels, Glazeguard also supplied and installed five, 2.6m high Safeguard vertical vision panels that provide a seamless perspective onto the seafront and out to sea. Each floor panel is bonded using the Kodiguard resin laminating system and is designed to cope with intensive crowd loading.
