The Korean company, LG Electronics (LGE) said it has developed equipment that can inscribe letters, bar codes, pictures and 3-D images inside glass using a laser beam. The technology can be applied to materials for flat panel displays, industrial glass and acrylic products. The company said the laser equipment crystallises an image by transmitting laser light into glass, without damaging the surface, the company said. At first it will be used to insert product information into its display products such as PDP (plasma display panel), TFT-LCD (thin film transistor-liquid crystal display) and organic EL (electro luminescence). It expects the machine will substitute foreign imports in a market worth 30 billion won per year. It plans to sell the machine to US and Japanese manufacturers for 350 million won per unit beginning in the second half of the year. The development resulted from LGE“s efforts to harness laser technology in high-precision manufacturing; research into which it has poured some 1 billion won over the past two years. The company will enhance its technology so it can be used to produce chips, displays and digital TVs.
