23 April 1998: Researchers at Moscow“s Technical Glass Scientific Research Institute (NIITS), whose main business is providing reinforced panes of glass for specialised uses, have reportedly found a way to make glass nails, which are twice as strong as regular metal ones, and have the advantage of not rusting. “All of our advances in the technology of strengthening glass go into the making of just one such nail,” said Vladimir Snyatkov, the institute“s acting research director. Meanwhile, the company is looking for investors for its glass nails. Snyatkov said the price of the nails is still high (US$ 1.50 to US$ 5 each), since the laboratory is only set up to make 200 per day. “If we can start mass-producing them, the price will be comparable with that of ordinary nails,” he said.
