The NSG Group has presented an important advance in sol-gel coating methods. The research, presented by Teruyuki Sasaki from Building Products R&D Japan at the recently-held annual meeting of the Ceramics Society of Japan, proves that it is possible to apply a thick and strong coating at low temperature by the sol-gel method, despite the previously accepted belief that thick sol-gel coatings were weak and required high temperatures. The NSG Group has developed the technology over many years and received the Toyota Project Award in 2006 for its research. Low-temperature thick sol-gel coatings are used for automotive IR-cut glass – which cuts out infra-red rays – in a range of Toyota and Subaru vehicles. Teruyuki was invited to make his presentation as part of the Society“s “Business R&D Frontier“ series, in which young scientists present research which has a commercial application. “Many departments worked together to commercialize this methodology, which is a world first,” said Teruyuki. “We received a lot of queries after the presentation and I am sure that the Group“s technology is drawing an increasing level of attention.” Professor Hiromitsu Kozuka, of Kansai University, who chaired the event, said that sol-gel technology had been a focus of attention for many years but the possibility of this new application had been missed. “NSG Group“s identification and realisation of this aspect is an excellent advance,” he said.
