Owens-Illinois of Puerto Rico plans to close its plant in Vega Alta on 18 February 2008 it was reported in Caribbean Business on 27 December 2007. The closure will directly affect some 185 jobs at the plant, which manufactures and recycles glass bottles. Carlos Bermudez, principal stockholder and general manager of the plant, said one of the two furnaces at the plant was shut down for repairs in June 2007. The cost of the repair of the furnace was estimated to be USD 4 – 5 million. Sources close to the company said Bacardi and Cerverceria India, both clients, are in conversations with the company“s headquarters in Ohio about a possible acquisition of the plant. Owens-Illinois also has a plastic manufacturing plant in Las Piedras, but since it is managed by a different company it will not be affected.
