The transfer of production from Coventry to Birmingham by UK glassmaker Pilkington Automotive is nearing completion. Early this year, Pilkington announced it was shifting production from its plant in Coventry to facilities in Birmingham and Italy. Of the 170 staff in Coventry, 20 have taken up job offers at the Birmingham site. The rest opted for redundancy packages and Pilkington also provided a re-employment advice service. Pilkington had hoped that more staff would agree to move to Birmingham and eventually had to organize a recruitment drive for about 130 workers. The Coventry factory, which Pilkington acquired when it bought Italian glassmaker Societ Italiana Vetro (SIV), is on a lease which runs out in February 2001.
