British glassmaker Pilkington has reported a fall in profits after heavy restructuring costs, but was upbeat about the future. The group, which has suffered badly from recessions in South America, said it was turning a corner on profitability after instigating a major shake-up of its international operations. It shut a plant in Texas and announced plans to close a further factory in California. Pre-tax profits for the six months to 30 September came in at UK 52 million against UK 66 million last year, slightly ahead of expectations. Turnover was flat at UK 1.36 billion.
