The Architectural Glass operations of Pilkington North America recently launched its latest batch of interactive, Web-based tools that make glass selection and specification easier and quicker. The Thermal Stress and Wind Load calculators – located at the Sun Management(TM) Web site (http://www.pilkington.com/sunmanagement) – address glass issues that arise in nearly every project. “Issues regarding thermal stress concerns are some of the most commonly asked glass questions in the project,” explained David Morris, business segment leader, commercial products. “In the Thermal Stress Calculator, we“ve taken the factors that affect thermal stress, and lead the user through each step with five basic questions. At the end, based on the thermal stress considerations, the program gives a recommendation for heat treating the glass, unrelated to local safety code requirements.” Morris noted that Pilkington“s Thermal Stress Calculator, the first of its kind, incorporates glass products from other manufacturers when used in conjunction with Pilkington glass to determine the stress level. The Pilkington Wind Load Calculator follows ASTM E1300 Standard Practice for determining load resistence to help users decide if their glass specifications meet project requirements. Users can input virtually any type of glass and IG unit information, regardless of manufacturer, lamination, glazing, glass thickness, etc., and determine the wind load resistance for a project.
