On 1 April 2009 a federal judge ruled that a lawsuit regarding age discrimination against Pittsburgh-based paint, glass and chemical company PPG Industries Inc. (PPG) could now move ahead as a class action case. US District Judge Arthur Schwab ruled that PPG must provide a list of salaried workers, of 40 or older, when they were fired in 2006, due to the downsizing of some divisions of the company. Five of these workers, who were at least 52, brought suit against the company in 2007, stating that older workers had been fired or pressured to retire because considered a financial drain by PPG management. PPG has denied wrongdoing, declaring that it does not discriminate and that employment decisions are not based on pension funding.
