Quinn Glass announced at the end of April 2009 that it will appeal an enforcement notice served against it that directs it to level its multimillion euro glass manufacturing factory near Chester, northern England. Quinn Glass was informed by the Cheshire West and Chester Council that the enforcement notice is effective from 29 May 2009 and that the glassworks must cease operations at the site within nine months of that date, and that the factory must be demolished within 18 months of that date. The local authority was compelled to serve the enforcement notice against the company following a court ruling earlier in April, a result of a complaint made to the High Court by competitor Ardagh Glass, which also operates a glass manufacturing facility in the area. Quinn Glass has been operating its facility near Chester without planning permission.
