The Russian Prosecutor General is preparing a lawsuit aimed at stopping the construction of a glass container plant in Ufa“s Kalininsky district. The action against the factory, which is being built by OOO Rusjam-Ufa, is due to violations of environmental legislation, according to the Ministry for Natural Resources. Oleg Mitvol, deputy head of the Federal Nature Utilization Control Service (Rosprirodnadzor), wrote to the Prosecutor“s Office in October 2005 asking it to look into the actions of Rusjam-Ufa as construction on the plant began without the definitive approval of a government environmental inspection. OOO Rusjam-Ufa is a subsidiary of Turkish glass plant Turkiye Sise ve Cam Fabrikalari A.S., or Sisecam. The business controls more than 30 glass companies, which annually produce more than 1.6 million tonnes of glass products. Company exports are estimated at more than USD 400 million per year and account for 20% of the disposable beer bottle market in Russia. Sisecam set up Rusjam in Russia in 2002. Rusjam also produces glass in the Vladimir region town of Gorokhovets.
