Jean-Louis Beffa, CEO of French glass and building materials group Saint-Gobain, has outlined the mission entrusted to him by President Jacques Chirac on 30 September 2004 which involves redefining France“s industrial policies and their implementation. Mr. Beffa will head a working group of researchers, economists, union representatives and industry chiefs. He will submit a final report to Mr. Chirac and Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin on 15 January 2005. Mr Beffa is in favour of a return to major Franco-German industrial programmes such as Airbus, in areas where France and Europe are losing ground, such as biotechnology and the Internet. He has also been critical of the decline in public spending on research in France.
