Saint-Gobain Glass Benelux has announced plans to restructure its Auvelais, Belgium, flat glass plant in order to improve competitiveness. Under the plan, 79 jobs will be lost, mostly through early retirement. Saint-Gobain has two float glass operations at the Auvelais site; Saint-Gobain Glass Benelux, which produces flat glass for the construction and automotive industry, and Saint-Gobain Sekurit Benelux, which processes glass for the auto sector. Each of the two float glass lines has over 200 staff. The group says similar lines it operates achieve the same results with a maximum of 160 staff. Saint-Gobain is planning to overhaul the lines in the next few years, with investments amounting to over BFr 50 million.
