Belgian chemical company Solvay SA said 13 May 2008 that it is the preferred bidder for Egyptian soda ash producer Alexandria Sodium Carbonate Co. “The competent Egyptian authorities are in the process of formally validating the choice of Solvay”. “Formal validation and signing of all the agreements could take place in the coming months”, Solvay chairman Alois Michielsen told shareholders at the company“s annual meeting. He did not give a purchase price. The former state-owned company has 1,120 employees and produces 130,000 tons of sodium carbonates a year.
