SORG: a glass plant expansion planned to perfection

By taking a complete scan of the melting furnace, batch charging system and batch house, SORG was able to create 3D images and combine them to form a coherent point cloud

Enlarging glass melting plants and reusing existing structures can be very complex. Therefore, a detailed visualization of the existing plant is crucial. Thanks to its expertise in 3D laser scanning, SORG was well-equipped to tackle every challenge when asked to increase the melting capacity of Steklarna Hrastnik in Slovenia.

By taking a complete scan of the melting furnace, batch charging system and batch house, SORG was able to create 3D images and combine them to form a coherent point cloud. For the larger furnace, special attention was given to the measurement of the rear wall, existing foundations and pipes.

The new quenching chamber connection had to be installed further to the front, but with accurate measurements, it was rotated and placed to fit through the existing ceiling breakthrough.

3D data of the refractory material, steel, stages and cooling were assembled and inserted on the scan to check for any collisions, before finally creating a 3D file of the new overall system.
