29 July 1999: Corning Incorporated announced that it will open a new Steuben flagship store in Manhattan, New York. The new location will put Steuben at the heart of one of the world“s most dynamic and upscale retail shopping districts; 667 Madison Avenue (at 61st Street). In a recent company statement, Corning said the move, which is scheduled for the spring of 2000, will allow the distinctive, luxury-crystal manufacturer to redefine and reconstruct its retail experience in a state-of-the-art, custom-built setting. The Corning Incorporated Gallery, a new, museum-like exhibition space dedicated to presenting glass art from all over the world, will be housed within the new Steuben facility and will open concurrently. Steuben“s current flagship location at Fifth Avenue and 56th Street will be closed when the new store opens; there will be no interruption in Steuben“s retail activity. “The relocation is an incredibly exciting move for us,” said Steuben“s chairman and CEO Marie McKee. “It is an unprecedented opportunity to rethink and redesign how to best serve our customers, and how to present the extraordinary work of our craftspeople to create a totally modern and welcoming environment that will set a new benchmark for retail experiences in the 21st century.”
