The glass manufacturing industry faces challenges in attracting capable, technically trained students to careers in glass manufacturing. GMIC has found that students become significantly more interested in glass manufacturing careers after they tour glass manufacturing facilities and see glass melting and forming on an industrial scale. To encourage such tours, GMIC is making available grants to underwrite the expenses incurred by higher education institutions that offer glass manufacturing tours.
“Student tours of manufacturing facilities provide a view behind the scenes of the highly diverse opportunities in the glass industry,” said GMIC President Martin H. Goller, of Corning. “They provide a spark for unexpected career paths and provide a great opportunity to learn the broad needs of engineering and manufacturing skills that are in demand in our field.”
Eligibility
Grants are available to post high school education institutions, such as universities and colleges.
Grants are for tours of glass manufacturing facilities. Such facilities would include industrial glass melting and forming plants, as well as glass technical centers. Tours that include museum visits must also include industrial facility tours.
Tours must be for post high school level students. These students may be of any technical major, such as materials science, mechanical engineering, glass, etc.. Students may be of any class level, such as, freshman, senior, or graduate.
Applcation process
Applications must be filled out electronically online at https://gmic.org/grants-application-form/
The application will ask for pertinent information, including: Institution, instructor, tour conductors, class or activity description, type of students attending (major, rank, etc.), facilities to be toured, number of students participating, a budget, where to pay grant to, and other information. Applicants must have obtained permission to tour facilities in advance of submitting proposals.
Awards and tours
- Recipients of grant awards will be notified by December 1, 2019.
- Awards will be paid to institutions in advance of tours.
- Tours must be conducted before December 31, 2020.
- Tours must be of the facilities indicated in the application.
- Students are required to fill out a post tour evaluation supplied to the institution by GMIC.
- Institutions have 60 days after the tour to return documentation, including an accounting of expenses and student evaluations.
