The US and Japanese governments are likely to hold talks in Tokyo in late November on the fate of their flat glass market accord expiring at the end of 1999. Washington has asked Tokyo to hold a meeting on the accord and is reportedly frustrated at the slow pace of US producers“ penetration into the Japanese flat glass market. Japan expects US pressures not only for extending the five-year accord, but also improving the terms of the agreement, sources said. So far, the US has not asked the Japanese government to extend or revise the accord. Tokyo plans to insist on scrapping the accord, arguing that its purposes have been accomplished, the sources said.
