Vetropack: Strategic energy management

The production of glass packaging is an energy-intensive process that lasts 24 hours a day. Therefore, a constant supply of energy is essential for the production process. The announcement of a 48-hour gas supply interruption to the Vetropack plant in Hum na Sutli, Croatia, in June 2024, due to maintenance work on the main gas pipeline, represented a significant challenge for maintaining the continuity of production.

Implementation of alternative solution
Existing solutions for gas supply interruptions were sufficient to maintain basic functions but were not adequate to maintain full operating capacity in production. Therefore, Vetropack Straža decided on an integrated technical solution that combines synthetic gas (produced by mixing liquefied petroleum gas and air) and natural gas from compressed natural gas tanks, which ensures smooth operation of the entire plant during interruptions.

The gas supply was interrupted in the early hours of 18 June and the interruption lasted for a total of 38 hours, ten hours less than expected.

The video shows how the alternative energy supply process worked during the interruption.

Strategic importance and business excellence
This solution is not only a significant contribution to the sustainability of the business of the group, but also a demonstration of Vetropack’s adaptability. Diversification of energy sources reduces the risks associated with supply interruptions and increases the security of the energy system.

Thanks to a proactive and strategic approach, Vetropack Straža has successfully reduced the business risks associated with energy supply disruptions, confirming its commitment to effective risk management and promoting sustainable practices.
