Union officials at Waterford Crystal scheduled a meeting with workers for 14 January 2009 to update them on attempts to find a buyer for the plant. According to union Unite, only a sale as a continued manufacturing operation will maintain a strong presence in the city. “Unite members remain committed to working closely with prospective purchasers of Waterford Crystal”, Unite regional organiser Walter Cullen said 7 January 2009. However, an initial suggestion by the receiver that some short-time working proposals may have to be put forward will cause “concern” to workers, said the union organiser. “We are seeking clarity from him as to what these proposals will entail. We all need to remain acutely conscious that the events unfolding are having a huge impact on workers, their families and the region”. Unite has appointed financial advisers Farrell Grant Sparks to assist with negotiations. “We also expect the Government to step up with whatever is required to ensure that Waterford Crystal maintains a manufacturing presence in the city, the natural and only possible genuine home of this iconic brand”.
